Summary: I'm impressed with this TIVO!!!
Comment: I used to have Replay TV but I had to upgrade because of the whole digital thing. I was unsure about getting TIVO because I was so happy with Replay TV. Also, because I had a lifetime subscription with Replay TV and I was worried that TIVO didn't offer the same deal. However, TIVO did have a lifetime subscription. So, that eliminated that excuse. This TIVO is great except for three things. 1) The setup is slow and takes a long time and it doesn't tell you how long it will take!! It just says it will take awhile. Well, an hour and a half later I was still waiting! This mainly applies to the initial set-up. 2) It can get stuck on a channel that doesn't have any reception. You have to turn it off sometimes to reset the TIVO. 3) I wish it could be like the one feature that the AT&T U-verse has where you can pause it and play it in any room. Other than these few hang-ups, this TIVO is really great. Easy remote, great features and alot of room to save your shows. I would highly recommended it.

Summary: Broken again - warranty sucks
Comment: Next week I will be receiving my THIRD TiVo HD XL in 22 months.

I love the Tivo's functions, but I hate the reliability, build quality and warranty service.

I've now had 2 Tivos break in less than one year from purchase. The first died and would not reboot 11 mo after purchase. That's when I discovered how the warranty works:

- You pay $50 to replace the box, even though it is still under warranty and it is broken through no fault of yours
- You have to send your old Tivo in first, then wait 5-7 business days while they send you a new one
- You pay for all the shipping (the $50 doesn't include shipping the broken box)
- You have to pay insurance (if UPS loses your box, it's your problem)
- You spend 2 weeks minimum without a Tivo
- You get the new Tivo and it's EMPTY - no settings, no season passes nothing. They do not backup online and cannot transfer your data, regardless of whether the old Tivo can still be booted. It takes weeks to get all your shows setup properly again.
- You have to re-download any movies you bought from Amazon or other sources

Now, that was pretty bad when it happened the first time. But here's the other catch: the box you receive is not new - it's a refurbished box. It gets you an extended 1 yr warranty.

Nine months later, the replacement box broke too. So now I have to repeat the above process, losing all my settings and paying $50 for the privilege of getting their broken box fixed

Bottom line: If I knew I'd be spending another $50 PER YEAR and having to start from scratch each time, I would think twice about buying a Tivo. The Tivo "experience" is better than a cable company DVR, but not if I have to replace it once a year and spend more than $200 per year on subscription+shipping+repair.

Unfortunately, the new Tivo premiere appears to be even more problem-prone and this is the last Tivo I will buy. I want an "appliance" that just works. Tivo isn't it.

Summary: Almost perfect DVR
Comment: This is my third Tivo. I'm a dedicated Tivo customer simply because nobody makes a better user interface. With this new DVR you'd better be dedicated to TIVO just to get through the cable card install headache with your cable company. My cable company actually has a script in place with their customer service reps to scare you off of this box. Don't let them intimidate you. This box is worth fighting for. The cable service rep actually told me that they couldn't rent cable cards for this box, to which I replied "Oh really? That's interesting because that's in complete violation of FCC rules. What is your name because I'm going to call the FCC right now about this." The customer service rep suddenly got very nervous and asked me if I could hang on for a moment while they asked their supervisor a question. A few minutes later I was informed that the cable service rep spoke out of turn and they could, in fact, rent cable cards. It then took three service visits from a cable tech to set up this box. Don't let them tell you it can't be done, or that the box doesn't work with their cable cards. It can and it does. It's in the cable company's interest for you to give up and rent their DVR. I would suggest that when you set up your appointment to tell the cable technician to bring at least six cable cards. With my cable company, the first four cards were no good.

I'm not sure if the lifetime service is worth it. I keep transferring it to each new Tivo I buy at an exorbitant rate, but I'm still not sure if it's worth it. The "lifetime" service is for the lifetime of each "box" you purchase, not "your" lifetime as a Tivo customer.

What I love about this DVR:

Fabulous, easy to use Tivo interface
Fat hard drive that holds loads of HD programming
Beautifully designed remote
Netflix "watch instantly" and Amazon Inbox supported

What I don't like about this DVR:

Inability to watch Pay Per View or On Demand programming (this is really the fault of the cable companies, but it's something you'll have to contend with)
No digital clock. Such a simple thing, but I never realized how much I used to look at that thing until it was gone off this latest model
The new remote eats through batteries
Annoying, unsolicited pop up ads eat into valuable hard drive space

Overall I'm satisfied with the box and continue to be a loyal Tivo customer.

Summary: The non-HD version was better
Comment: We upgraded our non-HD Tivo to the HD XL about four months ago and we've noticed that:
1) The HD version is noticeably slower than the non-HD version, with regard to changing menus, initiating a recording, and boot up of the system.
2) The quality of the HD systems apparently aren't as good either. Our relatively new Tivo just died last night. 24 days past the end of it's 90 day warranty. Per talking to the Tivo customer service rep it will cost at least $50 bucks to get a replacement.
So if you happen to notice the slightest issue with your Tivo within the first 90 days, send it back immediately; or purchase the item on a credit card that has purchase protection. I wish I had.

Summary: Love, LOVE my Tivo!
Comment: Once I figured out the set-up, (I am so not good @ anything electronic... the people @ customer service were so helpful). I LOVE my Tivo! I suggest not hooking up to the telephone line but getting the Tivo adapter, (customer service sent it to me for free), that allows you to hook up to the internet... That set-up was absolutely so simple!! No problems with the cable card.. I am so addicted to Tivo.. Two words to sum it up... BUY IT!
