Imagine a 72" widescreen HDTV that can fit just about anywhere. The Samsung HL72A650 is super slim and lightweight, making it the ideal TV for almost any room in your home. Plus, 1080p resolution and Cinema Smooth Light Engine deliver amazing picture quality with a wider range of colors that are simply breathtaking to watch.Sleek and modern in design, the HL-72A650 adds elegance to any decor. The ultra-thin, bezel surrounds this immense 72" display and keeps the focus on the picture, letting you enjoy more screen and less frame. It's also exceptionally lightweight, so it can easily hang on any wall.

Customer Rating: Summary: Save your money! Comment: I returned this DLP TV. I love SCI-Fi and action! This doesn't cut it! Everything is choppy, a blur and deep space is more grey then black because the contrast ratio is super low. To top this off the DLP/lamp died after a few weeks and they wanted me to spend an additional $450 for a replacement lamp. I was told that with the DLP type TVs (brand doesn't matter), it will always need a lamp replacement! While they state a lamp 'can' last up to 3 years, it is not a fact that it will and it is NOT covered under their warranty. I sent it back and purchased a smaller LCD ToC.
On average to above average usage, you can replace the lamp 1-3 times a year (direct quote from lamp company!); thus you can spend an additional $1350 a year on lamps. By the way, when you purchase your lamp replacement you 'can' buy a warranty good for ONE replacement within the guaranteed time period. Those of you that love this DLP/lamp technology, there are companies that refurbish lamps like new and you can save more than 50% on the cost. These places that refurbish, also will recycle your old lamp so, you don't have to add to the huge landfill.
So, is it really worth the up front savings? I say keep your money, because there is a new version of TV coming out soon which is made for Sci-fi and action (no lamps to replace)! This new version will reduce the prices of the current LCD too, in case you can't afford the latest/greatest.
Customer Rating: Summary: Samsung DLP Blows away the plasma and lcd screens Comment: We have had the Samsung for awhile now and it blows away every other screen in the neighborhood. Teamed with the Samsung Blu-Ray player it double upscans plain old DVDs to where you can't tell the difference from a blu-Ray movie. We save a lot by buying previewed movies from BlockBuster. Get this and get it fast before they quit making them.
DLP does not have to have any adjustments from year to year. The only downside is the bright bulb which is rated to last aprox 8 years, and it costs aprox $300.00 to replace.
The brightness is so intense that you can watch the large Samsung screen from any angle in the daytime with the windows open to sunlight.
True it's a few inches thicker than a flat screen, but if you can take an extra 8" or so, you will never be sorry. All my neighbors now wish they had gone with the Samsung.
We had a flawless install from Best Buy with surround around speakers installed in the cieling where they don't show. We also have a 15" subwoofer that really shakes the room when needed for movies or can be toned down for music and regular Hi-Def tv shows.
I hope Amazon has the guts to let this review stand. :-)

Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome Comment: This TV was huge...I mean when we're watching football, you feel like the game is in your living room. My guests cannot believe its size. I get compliments all the time. Blueray movies are a joy to watch. I cannot get from in front of the TV when I started to sit in front of it. I had doubts at first when I bought it, but after reading other reviews and having it for about a month, I love it and so will anyone who gets this thing.
Customer Rating: Summary: Samsung almost nailed this one. Comment: I purchased the HL72A650 after spending 3 weeks with a 73735 Mitsubishi DLP. I purchased the Mits from Best Buy and like all Mits DLPs the color was way off out of the box. I paid Best Buy to do an ISF calibration on the 73735. I quizzed them and they assured me before hand it would be a full calibration. The Best Buy calibration was $250 and so I agreed. The calibration Best Buy did helped immensely, but in fact, despite the claims, Best Buy does not really do a full true calibration. Of course I did not know that at the time. They set brightness, contrast, and sharpness levels, then the set the grayscale but they did not calibrate the primary and secondary colors to spec. The Mits needs the Full Monty calibration it is a mess with out doing that. From what I understand they can look spectacular afterward it a real pro does the full deal and does it right. Mine calibrated by Best Buy not so much. That left me in the position where I would have had to pay an independent to calibrate the set all over again to do the job right it so I returned the 73735 to Best Buy.
I then bought the Samsung through Amazon and that experience was excellent with the white glove delivery process. The Sammy has very good color out of the box and it is also quite sharp out of the box. It is strong in the areas where the Mitsubishi is weak. Unfortunately the Samsung uses the Texas Instrument Dark Chip 3. The Mits uses the Dark Chip 4 which has better blacks and significantly better shadow detail resulting in much better overall contrast.
The use of the Dark Chip 3 is not really the whole problem by itself. The problem is that at some point Samsung decided to remove the iris from their lamp DLPs light engines. An irus is used on DLPs to deepen blacks on the fly as the screen changes. Perhaps this deletion was done to make the LED DLPs more competitive against the lamp set. The net result is a TV that is very good in most every way except it has poor contrast and black levels for a TV at this price point. Excellent black levels and contrast are typically a given for DLPs.
I am keeping the Samsung but I am more than a bit disappointed with it. I also own a 3 year old HP 65" DLP which has an iris and mkes much better blacks. If you can get by with a 67" set, the Samsung LED DLP, HL67A750 will give you the Samsung color accuracy and great blacks with top notch shadow detail. If you need the 72" or larger size, get one of the Mitsubishis but be prepared to spend $300 plus on an ISF calibrator who really knows what he is doing. The Dark Chip 4 has 40 percent better contrast than the Dark Chip 3 so even the lesser priced Mitsubishi DLPs which also lack an iris make deep, almost plasma like blacks.
If the blacks were at the level of current Mitsubihis DLPs or even the Sammy bulb sets of a few years ago that included an iris, the HL72A650 with its accurate color and excellent resolution would deserve 5 stars plus. As it is, I can only give it 3 stars. If you mostly watch movies, than 3 stars might be a stretch.
Customer Rating: Summary: One word - HUGE Comment: Bought the Samsung HL72A650 and the matching stand. When the TV came out of the box, my wife and I just had to laugh - seeing it sitting in a warehouse like Costco is one thing, but sitting in our family room was something else entirely. Even though we have a big room, it still took us by surprise.
We quickly got used to the size, and absolutely love this set. The picture is fantastic, and HD and Blu-Ray are simply stunning. I also bought an upconverting Onkyo AV receiver, and even SD looks great. If you have the room and aren't worried about wall mounting, DLP is an incredible value.
One word of caution - Amazon sells this set through several 3rd party vendors, and shipping method is not always the same. For example, buying from Amazon.com comes with "white glove" shipping, but buying through 6ave (which I did) does not, something that was not very clear on the website. 6ave came with "bring through first threshold" shipping, which for me meant "bring in the front door and leave it." Not sure about you, but a 72-inch TV in the foyer of my house was a pretty big obstacle. I'd recommend calling the vendor before you buy to see what their method of shipping includes.
