Summary: Pretty good system if......
Comment: Item bought on 7 March 2010 and returned 3 weeks later. I read the reviews on this before buying it and they weren't to good but i decided to give it a chance anyway. I bought it for my dorm room in which it performed well until the reciever went out. I am not sure why it went out because i never blasted the music. For the short time that it did work, it was really good. I ended up sending it back and buying another brand system (Coby) for about $30 more which I hope is a lot better. Cheaper brands are better for me because im in a dorm and don't really need a Sony or other expensive brand name.

Summary: Good for small room operations
Comment: I have had my RCA system for quite some time and have had very little problems with it. The sound is great minus the bass which, in some areas is much lower than expected. The hard plastic material used to make the 5 speakers takes its toll on certain volumes and/or ranges of pitch. What I mean is, when listening to certain volumes or types of sounds such as explosions, the speakers, mainly the center, start to vibrate and rattle. I have tried to tape cushion around the speaker but the vibration comes from within. Also, the Dolby Digital setting isn't always compatible to the recorded sound from certain films. When watching a movie set on Dolby Digital Movie setting, you will often find yourself reaching for the remote to adjust volume between scenes. Hearing simple conversations requires a louder volume setting but when those action packed or quick scare horror moments come in, you quickly question if you woke the baby or upset the neighbors.
Don't get me wrong, I love this system, but I am a movie buff and I hate having to listen closely at the plot building up just to scatter to lower the sound before the big boom. I preferrably set my sound needs to, either church, or studio. They both project sound out of every speaker instead of just the center, aleviating that annoying vibration. Yes, I know thats not real surround sound but some movies just don't have enough projected through the 4 other speakers to intentionally suffer not hearing whats coming out of the front. All in all, if your alone, have no kids, no neighbors, or have a friend or significant other that is just as deaf as you, crank it up and enjoy. Otherwise, opt for a more balanced system or keep the remote handy.

Summary: Great Sound and Awesome Price
Comment: I can't see what some people expect for this amount of money. The system could be installed by a 4 year old child - SO SIMPLE. It sounds great and is plenty loud for most common size rooms ( mine being 14 x 14 ) In fact I can't imagine wanting to turn it up as loud as it will go. I saw a few reviewers that complained about speaker wire length - DUH splice in more wire, I mean its two wires FIGURE IT OUT.
Others complain about settings - DUH again read the manual and experiment with speaker levels and speaker distance - ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE. Overall the system is fine for most everyone and the sound is actually amazing for this price ( or higher for that matter ), coupled with the fact that there are two optical inputs and a digital coax input and this system is a real winner.

Summary: Great sound if you read the instructions.
Comment: I have read several reviews on this where people complained that it wasn't loud enough. When I first turned it on and played Cars on Blu Ray through an optical connection I felt the same way. But then I read the instructions and noticed a "Level" button on the remote. This button lets you adjust the output level of each speaker and the subwoofer from -10 to +10. I adjusted all speakers to +5 and the sub to +10. Now I listen with the main volume at 37 and it's plenty loud enough and the bass is solid and clear. While watching Monsters vs. Aliens the scene where the big robot is walking around San Francisco actually rattled my windows and shook the pictures on my walls. Great system for the price.

Summary: piece of junk
Comment: bought this from Walmart- the one w/ no dvd player- didn't need that. Turned all way up to max (50), it was not loud enough even with optical connection to my dish tv. I finally gave up and my 2 10 watt speakers on my sony tv - not even turned all the way up-- were significantly louder than the 1000- watt stereo system. The system came with an FM antenna, but no connection on the end of it, so it can not be connected. Also, when I hit skip forward on my dvr, the speakers pop every time. The system has no connections on the speakers, so if you have any problems with the wires, you have to throw the speakers away. I'll be returning this one next week and doing my homework and buying something higher quality. On my other TV, I have a Samsung 1200 watt. I've never turned it even close to full volume and its way louder than this RCA. Doesn't seem like an extra 200 watts should make this much difference, but this system is not worth buying.
