Customer Rating: Summary: Love, LOVE my Tivo! Comment: Once I figured out the set-up, (I am so not good @ anything electronic... the people @ customer service were so helpful). I LOVE my Tivo! I suggest not hooking up to the telephone line but getting the Tivo adapter, (customer service sent it to me for free), that allows you to hook up to the internet... That set-up was absolutely so simple!! No problems with the cable card.. I am so addicted to Tivo.. Two words to sum it up... BUY IT!
Customer Rating: Summary: Tivo Comment: The TIVO is the consumer's answer to cable company's rented DVR's. I did not know what I was missing...and it's incredibly easy to use.
Customer Rating: Summary: Best thing about it is the THX Logo on boot - Horrible product Comment: I am soooooo sorry I ever got rid of my second ReplayTV unit.
I was hoping to slowly ease into HD recording, and also take advantage of some of the streaming features from Amazon & Netflix.
Well let me tell you.
I used to think that Replay's units were a little finicky regarding reboots and connecting to the TV Guide service via wireless. (I've had 2 ReplayTV units for about 7 to 8 years)
Well let me tell you. This TiVo unit makes that look like a walk in the park.
It's simply HORRIBLE.
First off, if you ever have to reboot this thing, it can take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to just get back to live TV.
And it requires reboots OFTEN.
It required a firmware upgrade, that took an hour. REBOOT.
Setup my Amazon Streaming. REBOOT.
After a wireless connection failure lost the Amazon Video on Demand link. REBOOT.
The reason for my Title of this review is that when the unit does boot, you get that sharp, crisp, clear THX logo, with its trademark zoom in surround sound intro. It's really kind of a let down from that point forward.
Oh and.. the one thing that DOES work well, is the Advertising on the screen for Men's hair loss products. GREAAAAAT.
I'm keeping this thing because Amazon's method of delivery is better than Netflix.
It allows a full download to the device, which gives a smooth view of what you are watching.
Streaming to this device, ESPECIALLY over wireless is not ready.
If you don't have a better option, save yourself many setup headaches, and go with the Cable Company's DVR. Unless you want to spend and entire weekend, messing around these things, do yourself a favor, and go with a simpler, more reliable setup.
I'm disappointed that Amazon would hitch it's wagon to delivery system product that is clearly not ready for prime time.
I've read other reviews praising the Series 2 Tivo for it's ability to download stuff to portable devices, etc. I'm not familiar with Series 2 stuff.
But Series 3 is a really bad product.
UPDATE 5/13/2010
After using this thing for about a month, the verdict is in.
GIVE ME REPLAY TV or its equivalent over TiVO any day of the week.
Ok, being able to record in HD with this is nice, but the loss of "commercial skip" (I mean all in one button, not scrolling through) is the single biggest annoying thing about this system.
Oh...and thanks for charging me more for the desktop software to transfer shows to my iPod, and then limit the shows that I can copy!!?
Also the TV guide defaults to something that is not in a grid format!
UGH....
I always wondered how TiVO stacked up against replay, and now I know first hand.
It's kind of like a WINDOWS version of a DVR. Trying to be all things to all people, while only serving to make it more complicated for basic tasks.
Customer Rating: Summary: TiVo fan for life Comment: Having been a huge fan of our Series 2 TiVo we were disappointed to put it aside when we finally went HD. We initially got Comcast's Scientific Atlantic DVR and tried stomach it for as long as we could. It was a horrible piece of junk; the menus looked like something off a 1984 VCR. If we had been upgrading from a VCR to this DVR then we would have thought it to be the best thing since sliced bread. But the TiVo interface and features are light years ahead of the cable company DVRs and is a joy to use. We broke down and bought the TiVo HD XL and have been delighted with it ever since.
You need to get a cable card from your cable company to get their HD broadcase, which we do, but if you choose to skip the cable company altogether and go with only terrestrial HD broadcasts and wired or wireless Internet then you have a perfect system for recording over-the-air digital and HDTV and for downloading movies and videos from multiple sources without having to sit in front of your computer.
One reason to be excited about any TiVo product is the remote. Not many buttons compared to other DVRs because the TiVo has such an easy to use interface. You can control menus, pause, fast forward, and jump back without ever having to look at the thing. The Comcast DVR was impossible to operate without looking at it; it easily had more than double the number of buttons--tiny buttons--compared to the TiVo remote. And the hourglass shape of the remote fits nicely in your hands compared to a brick.
Other reviews complain about reliability. I can say that we've had no issues since March, 2009.
Customer Rating: Summary: Love My Tivo Comment: I purchased the HDXL model and love almost everything about it. We do not have cable and plan to never have cable as it is such a rip off. TIVO records off of our antenna, 2 shows at a time, and we can watch yet another show while it is recording. The HD quality is great. We are able to stream movies and download anything we want, so no more video stores, which is the main reason we purchased this unit. Besides video stores are almost gone forever.
TIVO is perfect for us because TV is very boring most of the time, so we can record what we want to and skip commercials, which is really easy with TIVO, and we can watch movies and cable shows on video immediately when the are out. We can download from Amazon and Blockbuster and there are others we don't use. Amazon has weekly specials, too.
You won't be sorry with TIVO as so many of our friends are with cable!
